HLC Chats With... Katie Flanders!

Katie Flanders is a Pennington native and a senior at The College of New Jersey. She is majoring in Communication Studies and Sociology with a focus in Non-Profit and Community Development. This semester she has joined the HLC team as their Outreach and Development Intern! Katie says "I have have loved the opportunity to learn more about the operations of a non-profit organization, work closely with volunteers and the community!"

(HLC): Do you have a nickname? How did you get it?

(KF): Yes! My full name is Kathryn, after my grandmother, but I've gone by Katie my whole life!

(HLC): What is your favorite childhood memory?

(KF): I loved growing up in a close knit family and my favorite memories are the ones playing dress-up with my sisters and swimming all day long in the summertime!

(HLC): Camp HLC is one of our wonderful programs. Have you ever attended summer camp? If yes, what was your favorite memory about camp?

(KF): While I never attended sleep away camp, I loved going to Art in the Park (run out of Kunkel Park in Pennington!) which allowed us to make arts and craft projects out of natural materials and spend the whole day with friends in nature!

(HLC): Who is your favorite musician?

(KF): I love a lot of different artists and types of music but I would have to say my favorite band is Fleetwood Mac. My mom used to play their music growing up and I grew to love them!

(HLC): Do you have a pet companion? If so, please share his/her name and what you love most about him/her.

(KF): I have a six year-old Boston Terrier named Frankie who is an integral member of our family! She is very laid back, loves to cuddle and treats!

(HLC): People would be surprised to know that...  (cool fact about you!)

(KF): I am actually the oldest of four girls!

(HLC): What is one thing you can share with others about resilience and adversity?

(KF): I think it's important to surround yourself with positive people and those whose own values encourage you to move forward and grow.  Having friends and family to lean on makes all the difference.

(HLC): What's your go to person, book, or movie for inspiration?

(KF): My mom has been my "go to" person for as long as I can remember. She has been a constant source of support and guidance throughout my life and spends so much time taking care of all of us, I truly don't know how she does it.

(HLC): If you have a go to resource (website, blog, etc...) that you think would help others, please share it!

(KF): A big part of self-care for me is being able to have a creative outlet. I find a lot of inspiration for future projects and ideas on Pinterest, whether it be drawing, baking, design, etc. I also enjoy the community aspect of Pinterest. Since it's a social networking site, I have had the opportunity to connect with people from all over!

(HLC): Share something that you want others to know about ALS...

(KF): If I have learned one thing from my time at HLC, it is that such a simple act can make a huge difference in the lives of children and families whose loved one has ALS. I have had the opportunity to assemble a number of Hugs of Hope care packages and I take comfort in knowing that these packages bring just a little bit of joy during an impossibly difficult time.

Thank you Katie for participating in HLC Chats With and for everything you do for HLC and for our families living with ALS. We are grateful to have you on our team!
