Together is Better

A Short Film Featuring the Voices of Camp HLC

In this In this moving short film from executive producers Bradley Cooper, Weston Middleton, John F. Wilson, Tom Chiodo, the truth about caring for loved ones with ALS comes directly from those often left out of the conversation: the kids.

This short film is from Lea Pictures in association with Ark Media, WETA Washington, D.C., PBS, and WellBeings as part of the larger Caregiving documentary initiative.

The full documentary premieres Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at 9 PM ET on PBS and the PBS YouTube Channel.

Last year, the team at Ark Media reached out to us about participating in a new national documentary exploring caregiving in all its forms. We were deeply moved that this essential topic was gaining such high-level attention, and we were even more grateful when they chose to spotlight our Camp HLC community as part of the story.

The film crew joined us at Camp HLC in both New Jersey and Massachusetts, where they were able to witness the laughter, tears, friendships, and breakthroughs that make camp so transformative.

At Camp HLC, a three-day retreat for youth ages 6–21 impacted by ALS, children step into a simple “confession booth” and speak directly to the camera. They share their stories of strength, sadness, love, and resilience. For many, it's the first time they’ve said these words out loud. These young caregivers carry an emotional weight beyond their years. Through this film, they’re finally seen.

“I like being everyone's equal rather than being that girl with the sick dad or that girl with the dead dad, you know?"

About the Film

Real Stories that Offer Hope in the Face of ALS

Over 53 million Americans provide unpaid care for a loved one. From aging parents to those battling chronic illness, every caregiver’s journey is one of sacrifice and love. This installment from WellBeings shines a light on these stories—lifting the veil on a national crisis and honoring the quiet strength of those who carry it.

The segment filmed at Camp HLC brings a vital perspective: the children.

Through Hope Loves Company, these kids gain more than community. They find the language to share what they’ve been through and the strength to move forward.
